I am asked on a regular basis “how often should I get a massage?” my answer …” depends”…not very concise but it really does depend.

What is your issue? How long have you had this pain? What are your goals? How compliant will you be with self-care? Are you willing to make some lifestyle changes to achieve your goals?

Or

Depends smiley

First question: What is your issue? Are you a ball of stress? Do you have a very high-pressure life that is not slowing down anytime soon? Are you highly anxious or suffering from depression?

Answer: 2 times per week and weekly 60 minute or 30-minute sessions have been shown to help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.

Sleep.

It can be an elusive creature for some of us.  Some nights you feel like you are trying to find Big Foot or the Loch Ness Monster.

I have had sleep issues for years. I am fortunate to say I generally sleep well now, but there were years that I felt like I was on the tumble cycle all night long.  I have several members of my family who have sleep issues and many a client has come to my table talking about their inability to get good night’s sleep.  There is a large population suffering.

According to the National Sleep Foundation’s inaugural Sleep Health Index™ (December 2014), Forty-five percent of Americans say that poor or insufficient sleep affected their daily activities at least once in the past seven dayshttps://sleepfoundation.org/media-center/press-release/lack-sleep-affecting-americans-finds-the-national-sleep-foundation

…wow… we are not alone in our tossing and turning.

Can you do it all? Can you work, be fit, take care of the kids, visit the family, have time for friends, have some me time……and so on.  How do you cram it all in? Can you and not be a stressed out hot mess? Something has to give.

Back when I was in high school it was all about women having it all, doing it all. Career, husband, kids, etc etc.  I swallowed the cool-aid and believed I would be that woman. Then some years later I became a mom and I very quickly realized it was all BS they failed to tell you if you “have it all” nothing gets done well and you feel like you are constantly on the edge. Truly you can not do it all and remain sane.

We all need a change of scenery on a regular basis. Our brains and bodies become bored and tired of the same routine but also overwhelmed with the monotony. We become less and less productive when we don’t listen to our instinct to take a break.

Have you noticed that when you return from a few days or weeks of being away, your brain seems to enjoy the experience of just being at home more than before your break? Your beautiful brain needs a change of surroundings and new things to see and do.

Changing the scenery doesn’t have to involve spending a large amount of money. A retreat can be something as simple as driving an hour from home and hiking for a few hours or visiting friends you haven’t seen in a while.

IT IS THAT TIME OF YEAR WHERE MORE SKIN IS EXPOSED. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO RE-RELEASE MY SKIN POST.

When you think of massage your skin may be the last thing you think of. You may think a massage will make your muscles feel better, that it will reduce your pain and relieve you of your stress, but you should think about your skin too. Our skin is the body’s largest sensory organ and it comes in contact with everything around us! Before you get a massage, you should also consider the current state of your skin. If you have a specific skin condition that can cause skin infections or wounds, you’ll want to skip the massages until your skin heals.

Did you know???
A relaxation massage can be just as beneficial as a deep tissue. The nervous system reacts in a positive way when treated kindly allowing muscles to relax. If you have had a very stressful day a relaxing massage can help those sore and achy muscles just the same as a deep tissue.

Did you know???
That your body lotion and sunscreens that you put on the day you come in for a massage changes the consistency of the oil I use. It can make it stickier and require me to use more. If you can skip the lotion before coming in that would be great. Athletes if you have had a sweaty workout prior to your massage the dried salt on your skin also change the consistency of the oil. Clean lotion-free skin is best.

THIS WEEK STEPHANIE FROM IDEAL HEALTH IS MY GUEST BLOGGER. SHE HAS HELPED MANY PEOPLE BECOME A WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS STORY.  MAINTAINING A PROPER WEIGHT IS ONE COMPONENT OF LIVING A HEALTHY LIFE.

MAINTAINING – MISSION IMPOSSIBLE?

Let’s face it, weight loss is simple math. Use more calories than you consume and the weight will come off. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. Even with the Ideal Protein protocol, nearly one-third of my clients are back where they started within three years. For long-term success, there need to be changes in habits and behaviors. Losing weight is a goal, not a behavior. If my clients are successful in making such changes, then their weight loss is automatic and maintained.

I am happy to share with you that Peaceful Strength Massage Therapy has moved. The new location is 167 South River Rd. Bedford, NH.

I have had several people ask why.  It is all about you my client.  I want to provide you the best service possible. This goes beyond massage. I want you to have the ease of location with plenty of off-street parking, with a relaxing and quiet atmosphere.

The new office has a waiting room where you can come a few minutes early to unwind with a cup of tea or coffee.  The treatment room is larger. We have the space to go over stretches that you can do at home to help extend the benefits of the massage.  There is also a private office. No more coming into a workspace/massage room. Being a solo practice we will no longer hear the chatter in the shared waiting room or feel the vibrations of the main door slamming closed every time someone comes and goes to the dentist.

All along I have wanted to have a space like this and I am so happy to have found it. I am positive that you, my client, will also love this space. I hope to see you at my upcoming open house May 6th or soon for your next massage.

Stress.

We all have it.

We can’t seem to get away from it.

There is good stress and then there is BAD stress.

I don’t know about you but I have an intimate knowledge of bad stress, and I don’t like it, no sir.

Stress has many health connections.  I found a list at stress.org  of “50 signs and symptoms of stress”. This is the first 10 listed…

I overheard Stephanie (Ideal Health) talking about how she has clients who lose weight and have less pain and less inflammation. A blog idea came to mind and research ensued…..

Do those few extra pounds really cause pain? Over the past few years as a massage therapist, I have noticed some trends.

  1. Sitting at a desk or driving all day causes repetitive stress injuries. Most often seen in the neck and shoulders.
  2. Exercising too HARD all the time sets you up for injuries.  Runners who never take time off eventually HAVE to because of chronic pain, especially in the lower extremities.
  3. Excess weight has a serious impact on your bones, joints, and muscles.
